Coach Travis Jones

Coach Jones is originally from Fond du Lac, WI, where he grew up a multi-sport athlete, competing in hockey, football, basketball, golf, and baseball.  Travis was raised by a father who played collegiate basketball at the age of 40, coached at the collegiate level, and was also a full-time official with the WIAA and NCAA.  With this unique perspective, Travis learned at an early age that the quickest way to get an advantage in any sport, is to understand it better than your opponent.

Over the past 25 years, Travis has held Head or Assistant Coaching roles in youth basketball, football, and baseball. He has been coaching baseball in the Cottage Grove area since 2016, working with players across multiple programs and levels of play. His experience includes Little League (from T-Ball through All-Stars), local recreation department programs, and travel baseball teams ranging from 9U to 16U. Coach Jones is also a WIAA registered official.

Throughout his coaching career, Travis has focused on teaching strong fundamentals, building confidence, and helping players develop a deeper understanding of the game. He has worked with athletes at all stages of development and understands that every player learns differently and progresses at their own pace.

Along with his wife, Travis is the owner and operator of In The Grove Athletics. Together, they are committed to supporting community-based players and teams by increasing access to quality training space, instruction, and player development opportunities. Their mission is rooted in growing the game locally and creating an environment where athletes can learn, improve, and feel supported.

Coach Brittany Carl

Coach Carl currently serves as the head softball coach for Middleton High School, a perennial power in the highly competitive Big 8 Conference. Since taking the reins, Carl has led the Cards to multiple winning seasons, a number of program milestones and deep postseason runs year after year.

As a student-athlete, Carl enjoyed an illustrious collegiate career at NCAA Division I Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. A four-year starter at shortstop for the Pirates, Carl earned both All-BIG EAST and Capital One Academic All-America accolades, and remains ranked in the top-10 in program history in a number of key offensive categories. To cap her impressive career, Carl was awarded the BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award, as well as the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship – an honor given to only 29 female and 29 male spring sport student-athletes across all three NCAA divisions. In 2013, Seton Hall University recognized Carl as both its Scholar Athlete of the Year and its Most Valuable Pirate, the latter of which recognizes a senior student-athlete who displays leadership, dedication and exemplary contributions on the field, in the classroom and in the community. As a senior, Carl was also endorsed as one of Seton Hall University’s candidates for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.

Upon graduating from The Hall in 2013, Carl turned her sights to coaching, ultimately hoping to share her experience and passion for the game with the next generation of softball players. She has led teams and instructed athletes all over the country, across various age and skill levels. Brittany has been with In The Grove Athletics since January 2025.

Coach Shawn Killebrew

Coach Killebrew is a former NCAA Division II baseball player at Winona State University (WSU), in Winona, MN, where his experience with the Warriors shaped his competitive mindset and commitment to player development. During the late 1990s, he contributed to a powerhouse WSU lineup that captured two NSIC conference championships (1995, 1998), an NSIC Tournament title (1998), and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Central Region Tournament (1998). Playing under Hall of Fame coach Gary Grob, Killebrew was part of a tradition-rich program built on excellence.

Individually, Shawn posted a .407 batting average as a junior in 1998—ranking among the best single-season marks in program history. As a senior, he served as team captain and hit .356 with 52 hits, 5 home runs, 19 doubles, and 46 RBIs, earning First Team NSIC All-Conference honors in 1999.

After graduation, Killebrew continued playing amateur baseball across the Midwest in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin until retiring in 2008. His 20+ years in competitive baseball instilled a deep understanding of team culture, preparation, and the mental side of the game—principles that now guide his coaching philosophy focused on accountability, situational awareness, and relentless work ethic.

Since 2019, Shawn has coached at Monona Grove High School across all levels of baseball, including JV2, JV, and serving as a Varsity Assistant in 2022. In 2023, he transitioned to Varsity Assistant for MG Softball. He currently coaches at the club level with the Johnson Creek Yellow Jackets. Shawn has been part of In the Grove Athletics since its opening, providing baseball and softball instruction to players of all ages and skill levels. He is also the proud father of three daughters.
